Because I just want to make sure....
~Basic Information~
Name: Lady Aelyssa Mormont (pronounced "eh-liss-uh"
Age: 24
Gender: Female
~Character Traits~
Personality: Aelyssa is every bit the She-Bear that Westeros has come to expect a Mormont lady to be. Stubborn, fiercely loyal to her liege lord and to her family, and unforgivingly protective of those close to her. Though she is yet unmarried, Aelyssa is not necessarily opposed to the concept of marriage; she simply has not yet found the suitor who meets her standards - and can handle her occasionally-gruff exterior.
Among her peers and fellow liege lords, Aelyssa is stoic – the picture of nobility. She is levelheaded, determined, confident, and steadfast. When her opinions or beliefs are challenged by others, she defends herself with strength and as much patience as she can, though she wouldn’t be considered a patient woman by most of those who know her. She does her absolute best to prove her worth as an equal among the other lords of the North, because she knows that at any moment, they may turn on her.
When Aelyssa is with her family and close friends, she lets down her inhibitions and is as raucous, wild, and excitable as they come. She loves nothing more than a good meal spent in good company, and though she’s the farthest thing from the domestic type, she enjoys hosting feasts and small tournaments – any sort of party where she can “play” with her friends.
Appearance: Aelyssa is the image of the beautiful young she-bear. She stands at 5'5" and has a strong - but not thick or heavy - build. She has feminine curves without being stick-thin. Her long, wavy hair is a shade lighter than black, and she has light blue eyes that see things objectively. Her small lips are bow-shaped and rosy, and though her skin is pale, her cheeks almost always have a healthy flush to them.
Aelyssa commonly wears men's-style clothing, but cut and tailored to fit a feminine body. Her tunics, trousers, and jerkins are either the dark green and black of House Mormont, or some shade of grey or stony blue. She has a cloak lined with black fur that she swears was the pelt of a bear her father killed on the day she was born, though no one can verify that information.
Skills: Aelyssa is known for three things: one, being the young ruler of House Mormont, of course, but the others are her ability with a longbow and her mastery of making people like her. Though she is certainly capable of making enemies, her roguish charm and wit are adept at winning people over, and for this reason, House Stark appreciates her fealty - because she can convince just about anyone to support whatever cause she stands behind.
Weaknesses: Despite her ability to win people over, Aelyssa has a penchant for taunting her enemies. When she makes an enemy, she finds it hard to keep herself from making matters worse by constantly trying to exert her power over them or talk smack to them. She has a sharp tongue when she's not being careful, and she has a bad habit of saying things like "let them try to stop me" - things that can get her in serious trouble. Her other major weakness is that when her people or those close to her are threatened, she would do anything it takes to save them, even if it means breaking an oath or giving up her own life.
~Character Background~
History: Aelyssa Mormont was the third child and only daughter born to Lord Jaylon Mormont, and his wife, Lady Tameris, formerly of House Umber. Aelyssa's older brothers Lewys and Jarrod were eight and six years older than she was, respectively, and while Lewys was more preoccupied with things like practicing swordplay and terrorizing the Maester, Jarrod took his baby sister under his wing as she grew up. Aelyssa and Jarrod were always close, and Aelyssa much preferred the company of her father over that of her mother, whom she found stifling and infuriating.
When Aelyssa was ten, her father allowed her to train with her brothers, who were then eighteen and sixteen. Lewys always beat her quickly when they sparred, and never gave her any pointers - he always seemed bored when fighting her. Jarrod, on the other hand, enjoyed their bouts and shouted out suggestions and encouragement, oftentimes playing out their fight as one of the great battles of old. Jarrod always had Aelyssa's best interests at heart, and throughout their childhood, the two were inseparable.
When she was thirteen, Aelyssa's father, Lord Jaylon, fell ill after an old wound he had sustained in battle reopened and became infected. Aelyssa desperately begged the Old Gods to spare her father, but to no avail. Several weeks later, Lord Jaylon died, leaving his wife, Lady Tameris, in charge of Bear Island. The lady, however, was in no state to rule; grief-stricken by her husband's death, she told her eldest son, Lewys, to rule in his stead. Lewys was just shy of 21, had been primed to rule, and took the seat as Lord Mormont. Two years after Lewys claimed the lordship, two things happened: the first was that Aelyssa's mother took her own life by jumping into the sea; the second was that Jarrod announced that he would be leaving for Castle Black in order to join the Night's Watch. Aelyssa was inconsolable, though she felt bad for the fact that she was more upset about Jarrod taking the Black than her mother's suicide. The night he announced it, Aelyssa spoke with him in private and asked why he was leaving her to become a Crow - Jarrod replied that he did not want to leave her, but that if he stayed, she would not be the one to inherit Bear Island once their brother was no longer the lord. A little shocked by his statement, Aelyssa asked her brother what made him think that Lewys would not last as Lord of Bear Island. Jarrod told her that she knew as well as he did that Lewys was not sensible enough to be lord; he would make some choice that would likely get him killed or overthrown. Aelyssa thanked Jarrod for his kindness, and he told her that she would make a great Lady Mormont someday, and that he hoped it was soon.
Jarrod had not been at the Wall a year before his prediction came true.
While on a hunt, Lewys went off on his own in the hopes of killing the gigantic ice bear that had been preying upon his people's livestock. The bear killed him before his men found him and drove the creature off. Bear Island buried its young lord, and Lady Aelyssa Mormont became the next ruler of the stronghold at the tender age of sixteen. Advised by Maester Carrol - and Jarrod, through letters they wrote to each other constantly - Aelyssa presided over Bear Island. She met with the lords of the other houses of the North, resisted marriage, and did her best to protect and please her people.
After two years of rule, eighteen-year-old Aelyssa saw her first battle. She had always been good with a bow, even in her childhood, and when Wildlings threatened the lands surrounding Winterfell and House Stark sent out the call for aid, Aelyssa was the first to respond. Bringing fifty of her best men - because, she reasoned, fifty would be the highest number necessary, especially if they were the best - she traveled to Winterfell and helped fight off the Wildling raiders. She earned the gratitude and respect of House Stark, and returned home feeling justified in her position. To celebrate, she brought her five closest friends (who were also her most trusted men-at-arms) on a hunt. It was then that Aelyssa killed her first bear - after she delivered the final blow, she asked her friends to leave her alone with the dead bear for a few minutes. They obliged, and she closed her eyes, laying her hands on the bear's thick fur before carving out its heart and burying it. She felt that it was the greatest way to honor the creature - to return its heart to the earth to which it was tied. She and her friends then brought the bear carcass back to the keep to celebrate the victory.
Since then, she has ruled with the love of her people, the respect of her sworn lord, and her own tenacity, which is as great as that of the bear whose heart is connected to hers.
